German scholar Neumann's spiral of silence theory

" Why are they trying to take over the media and comments? "

The spiral of silence theory states that if people around you support a certain opinion, you will remain silent to avoid isolation, even if you have a different opinion. When media outlets push public opinion in a certain direction, it is reflected in society as if it were the majority opinion, and the public is silenced.

Neumann, a German scholar, has developed a similar theory to the consensus theory, which suggests that dissenting voices are increasingly silenced by the influence of media outlets, much like a spiral widening outward. 

For example, if someone disagrees with a post on a community message board and is attacked repeatedly by others, there is less and less dissent after that. This is a form of the spiral of silence theory. 

This leads to the idea that if the media continues to report in a certain direction, even though the majority of the public is against it, it has a reversing effect on society, making it seem as if the majority opinion is a minority opinion. A silenced public opinion is already not a public opinion, it's just being ignored. 

To the other side of the spiral of silence theory, 
It's the same principle behind why certain groups seek to control the media, intervene in the public's communications, and continually lead to the marginalization of public dissent.
