The Battle of the Somme (or Battle of the Somme) was a battle fought by British, French, and German forces in northern France during World War I. It took four months and 1.2 million casualties to advance 12 kilometers. It was also the first battle in which tanks were used, with 60,000 casualties on the first day of fighting.

In World War I, before the Battle of the Somme, France and Germany suffered heavy losses in the Battle of Verdun. France and Britain decide to attack the Somme region in an attempt to disperse the German offensive concentrated at Verdun.

With the British in command, the British strategy in the area was quite simple: a massive artillery barrage for 8 days with 3000 prisoners, followed by a charge with cavalry and infantry.

However, despite the heavy bombardment, the Germans hiding in the trenches and the barbed wire fences were not eliminated, and the British used 19C tactics of warfare, forcing soldiers to run at a slow pace through the heavy lines. They became targets for the German machine guns, and the British soldiers charged and died as if they were being slaughtered, and those who evaded were summarily tried and shot. The Battle of the Somme is known as the slaughter of the world wars. 

In World War I, the British were the first to use tanks. 

In the Battle of the Somme, the British used tanks for the first time in the war. The MK.1 tank was the first vehicle to see combat, but it was ineffective due to its breakdowns and slow speed, making it an easy target for artillery.

In the end, the Battle of the Somme, which saw heavy casualties on both sides and was interrupted by heavy snow, resulted in 1.2 million casualties and, when combined with the nearby Battle of Verdun, 2.1 million casualties. The highest single-day casualty count in history, not just of World War I, it also stands as one of the most ignorant and ridiculous battles in Allied combat history.
